Senior Sheamus McLaughlin has grown up on the diamond, and with 14 years of baseball behind him, he has developed into a versatile defender. Splitting time between second base and the outfield, McLaughlin delivers reliability and athleticism to every position.

Much of his development stems from his father, who has played the biggest role in his baseball journey.

“He pushes me every day to be better,” McLaughlin said.

That drive for improvement has shaped his work ethic and mindset, helping him understand what it takes to compete at a high level. At this stage, his biggest challenge comes from the talent he faces on the mound. Each game brings pitchers capable of exposing even the smallest mistake, reinforcing just how demanding and detail‑oriented baseball can be.

To handle pressure, McLaughlin keeps things simple, staying calm and locked into the game plan.

His current goals include improving his offense, especially his ability to spread the field and become a more complete hitter. He stays motivated by a highly competitive practice environment where teammates push one another daily.

“My teammates are like my brothers,” McLaughlin said.

The culture within Newcastle’s baseball program, he added, is strengthened by Coach Jarod King’s leadership. King leads by example while demanding the best from his players and holding them to a high standard.

Off the field, McLaughlin enjoys golfing and working out, but baseball remains his priority. Time away from the game gives him space to reflect on what baseball has taught him. One of the most impactful lessons came from losing a game in which his team held a large lead.

“I learned not to coast and to give 100% no matter what,” he said.

He was reminded to stay mentally sharp and fully present during every single play. That moment has stayed with him, becoming a foundation for how he approaches the game’s finer details.

In a sport decided by small moments, McLaughlin has learned the value of staying steady. From tying his cleats the exact same way to maintaining consistent focus between the lines, he stays prepared for whatever comes after the final out.
